Training Overview

Lithium & Sodium Battery Classification and Compliance

All lithium and sodium cells and batteries are classified as Class 9 dangerous goods. Depending on their type, quantity, and configuration, they may be:

  • Fully regulated

  • Subject to reduced requirements (commonly referred to as exempted or excepted)

Even when subject to exemptions or exceptions, lithium and sodium batteries remain regulated under the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Act.

Failure to comply with exemption or exception conditions is a violation of the TDG Act.
